The Columbus East High School Science, Social Studies, and Fine Arts Academic Teams competed at the State Championship for the Indiana Academic Super Bowl on Saturday, May 5, 2012 at the Loeb Playhouse at Purdue University.

The Science and Social Studies teams each finished fourth in the state in their competitions in Class 1, the large school division.

The Fine Arts team won the Class 1 state championship, which was the Fine Arts team's 4th state championship since 2004.

This was also the 13th state championship overall for the entire Columbus East Academic Team program since 2000, making East's Academic Teams the most successful competitive team in Columbus East history. East was one of only 4 schools in the entire state in Class 1 to have at least three academic teams qualify for state this year, and it was recognized for the fourth consecutive year as a "Top 10 Overall" Academic Team in the state in class 1.

Since 2000, the Academic Teams of East have won many state championships; at least one in every year except for 2001.  For students on academic team, the challenge is worth the effort because what is learned is something that the average student may never learn about.  Students who want to try new things are well suited for the academic teams.  To prepare for competitions, students study their given topic, whether that would be direct facts or reading a book.

Student benefits from participation in Academic Team include:
    1. Better comprehension of concepts covered in regular classes
    2. Improve reading and problem solving skills
    3. Use material learned in future research paper assignments
    4. Challenge oneself academically
    5. Opportunity to compete and succeed outside of more recognized areas (sports, performing arts)
    6. Build good friendships with peers and good memories from high school competitions
    7. Fun!
