When first entering, we offer the following classes:

Photojournalism 1

In preparation for a staff, students will study Adobe Photoshop and will also learn to operate their digital cameras beyond the auto setting. Photo assignments are designed for use by North's national-award-winning publications. This course is a prerequisite for school media work.

Journalism 1

Looking to write, design, or take photos for North's award-winning newsmagazine, yearbook and other media? This is the class that prepares you by covering the basics, including interviewing and storytelling, writing news, features and sports, and gaining a foundation of journalism law and ethics. This course is a prerequisite for school media work.

In our program, we offer the following lab courses:

BNN Radio and Television 1 and 2 (BULL DOG NEWS NETWORK)

This is our multimedia video program. This is the laboratory class that produces North's national award-winning daily announcements and monthly magazine programs using digital video technology. Emphasis is on interviewing, writing with a storytelling focus, camera operation, digital video and audio editing and graphics. Students will also serve as peer mentors. This course is a C4 course and counts toward the technical honors degree.

Log Yearbook

This is the laboratory class which produces North's national award-winning yearbook, Log. Emphasis on developing skills in interviewing, polling, writings, layout, business management, photography and digital production procedures employed in producing the yearbook. Staffers also sell advertising as a requirement of the course. This course fulfills a fine art or elective credit.

Triangle Newsmagazine 

This is the laboratory class writes, designs and digitally produces North's nationally-recognized school newsmagazine, The Triangle. The staff works in conjunction with the staff of cnhsmedia.com, crossing platforms variety in storytellings. Staffers also sell advertising as a course requirement. This course fulfills a fine art or elective credit.

CNHSMEDIA.COM News Website

This a laboratory class covering several public relations project areas which may vary as services are needed by North students, staff and community. The staff produces North's national award-winning website cnhsmedia.com. They write, design infographics and take pictures, updating the site weekly. The staff also uses social media sites like Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter for breaking news. The staff works in conjunction with the staff of the Triangle, crossing platforms for variety in storytelling. Staffers also sell advertising as a course requirement. This course fulfills a fine art or elective credit.

25th & Maple Media: Immersive Media 

This is a project-based learning experience for advanced media students. In this course, staff members will work with clients in the school, BCSC, and the community. Projects include marketing, advertising, social media and branding. Students will work in conjunction with the other student media staffs to improve sales techniques and marketing strategies.

About the advisers

RACHEL MCCARVER, MJE, is the BNN adviser and co-adviser of the Triangle newsmagazine and cnhsmedia.com website. McCarver is the 2017 Ella Sengenberger Adviser of the Year, a former president of the Indiana High School Press Association and a 2010 JEA Rising Star. McCarver graduated from Ball State University and has her license in Journalism, English, and Computer Education. She started in the 2007-08 school year and regularly teaches photojournalism and English classes.

ROTH LOVINS, CJE, is a 2017 graduate of Ball State University. Lovins advises the Log yearbook, 25th & Maple, and co-advises the Triangle newsmagazine and cnhsmedia.com. As a student journalist, Lovins worked with the Chicago Tribune for its Olympics coverage, been employed as an art director for a student magazine, been a content editor and served as a photo editor. Lovins has his license in Journalism, English, and Computer Education. He started in the 2017-18 school year and regularly teaches journalism 1 and English classes.
