What does this mean to you?

Online applications must be submitted by 4pm on Friday, August 31, 2018. We strongly recommend you check Heritage Fund’s website, heritagefundbc.org, regularly throughout the summer for notice of application availability.

    Other important application notes
    · LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION/INFORMATION REQUESTS –

The online Lilly application requires two letters of recommendation (from a classroom teacher and from a counselor/supervisor/other professional) and verification of academic information by your counselor or adviser. These items are handled through the Request section of the application. You will enter the name and email address of the person from whom you are seeking the information and an email with a link into your application will be generated for them to complete the request. Because you will be completing applications largely over summer break and during the immediate start of the school year, it is recommended you make these requests early in the process. All application materials, including completed letters of recommendation/guidance information requests (verification of GPA, test scores, etc.), must be received by the deadline for a submitted application to be considered complete. Students should plan accordingly, and start working on getting recommendations well before the deadline.

    · TRANSCRIPTS –  You must submit your request for a transcript via the online Parchment delivery service. In the Transcript section of your application, you will enter a checkmark to verify you have requested your transcript be sent. If a transcript is not received by this date, a submitted application will not be considered complete.

    · EVALUATIONS THROUGH JUNIOR YEAR – Students now will be evaluated on their application largely through their junior-year performance, namely in the community/scholastic involvement section and academic transcripts.

    · FINANCIAL INFORMATION – Through the Financial section of the application, you will link to the Indiana College Costs Estimator website to provide your financial information. You will receive a free customized financial report and access to helpful college information. Your College Cost Estimator also must be completed by the application deadline. Like the Transcript section, you will enter a checkmark to verify you have completed your online Estimator.

    · TEST SCORES – Plan to take your SAT/ACT tests accordingly for these scores to be included on the application.

    · ANNOUNCEMENTS – Selected scholars will be notified in early December.

    Why the change?
Two reasons for the modification: nominating and selecting Lilly Scholars earlier in the school year will give more time for the selected
scholars to decide which college or university to attend and for the colleges and universities to be more engaged in recruiting them; and, secondly, the U.S. Department of Education modified some requirements for the Free Application for Federal Student aid (FAFSA) and will be making it available online earlier than in previous years.

About the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship
The scholarships, administered by Heritage Fund and Independent Colleges of Indiana, are the result of a statewide Lilly Endowment initiative to help Hoosier students reach higher levels of education. Since the scholarship program began in 1998, 41 Bartholomew County students have been named Lilly Endowment Community Scholars. The endowment has awarded more than $2.5 million collectively to these scholars. Scholarship applicants will be evaluated on academic performance; scholastic activities, community involvement and employment; leadership; financial need; responses to short
answer questions and a 450-word essay; and two recommendations.

    Eligibility Requirements:
    • A resident of Bartholomew County who is on course to graduate with a diploma from an accredited public or private Indiana high school (accredited by Indiana Department of Education) by the end of June 2018, but not have graduated before the start of the 2017-2018 school year. Students graduating mid-year are eligible.
    • Have at least a 3.5 GPA on a 4.0 point system at the end of the sixth semester of high school. (An official high school transcript is required.)
    • Applicants must demonstrate a significant financial need for pursuing postsecondary education.
    • Able to demonstrate significant school involvement, community service, good character and leadership skills.
    • Intend to pursue a full-time baccalaureate course of study beginning in Fall 2018 at an accredited public or private college or university in the state of Indiana. (The recipient must notify Heritage Fund prior to May 1, 2018, which Indiana college or university he/she will attend.)
    • Be available for a personal interview with the selection committee, if chosen as a finalist.
    • Special consideration may be given to applicants who intend to remain and pursue an occupation in Indiana following graduation from a postsecondary institution.
Some of the criteria have changed, including a higher minimum GPA, and the requirement that applicants must demonstrate a significant financial need for pursuing a postsecondary education and significant school/community involvement.

The intent of the scholarship is to provide financial assistance to applicants residing in Bartholomew County who are not only academic high achievers, but who have a special circumstance and/or face financial barriers to pursuing a postsecondary education.
