    North High School has been co-sponsoring a series of drama camps with Columbus Parks and Recreation every summer since 2000.  The camps give elementary and middle school students a chance to learn, rehearse, and perform a 35-60 minute play under the direction of the North Drama staff and students.
     
    The kids come in on Monday morning knowing next to nothing about the play, and by Friday at 5:00, they will be doing it all for their friends and family.
     
    Currently, there are two weeks of camp each summer, culminating in two different productions.  Between the two camps, all grades, kindergarten through eighth, have the opportunity to participate.
     
    One week of the camps involves two different age groups--students going into Kindergarten through second grade and those going into third through sixth grades--in one production.  The third to sixth grades work on the bulk of the production in a camp called PROJECT:  A*C*T.  While the primary focus of this day long camp is developing basic acting and stage skills, the campers also work on improvisation and some of the technical areas of the show.  The kindergarteners through second graders participate in a half day camp called PLAY ON!  They work on different pretend play games, production-related crafts, as well as learn their parts as a small chorus in the final production.  In past summers they have played the animals in Sleeping Beauty, the other kidnapped puppies in 101 Dalmatians or the monkeys in The Jungle Book. 
     
    The other week of camp, PROJECT:  D*R*A*M*A, is reserved for ages for students going into fifth through eighth grades.  In this day-long camp, the campers perform not only a much longer and more difficult script, but they also spend more time working on sets, costumes, props, lighting and developing improv skills.  In 2007, PROJECT:  D*R*A*M*A's production of the one act version of High School Musical was so successful, that it encouraged the local community theatre group, the Mill Race Players, to perform the full length show the following year.  Every few years, the PROJECT: D*R*A*M*A is replaced with PROJECT:   S*H*K*S*P*R, a week long intensive on a play from the Shakespeare cannon.
     
    After expenses, all proceeds from the camp go the North Drama students' trip funds.  The North students regularly take trips to such wondrous and far-off locales as New York City and Louisville, Kentucky.
     
    Registrations for these camps are taken through the Columbus Parks and Recreation Department, starting in late April or early May of each year.
